Cleveland native Michael Cartellone has had quite a career in rock and roll. He first started out in the music industry as the drummer for Tommy Shaw’s solo band. That eventually led him to join the supergroup Damn Yankees. The multi-platinum selling group featured Shaw from Styx (guitar, vocals), Jack Blades from Night Ranger (bass, vocals) and Ted Nugent (guitar, vocals) and Cartellone (drums).
WHITEFISH BAY – Artist Peter Max will present many of his “cosmic” works at Milwaukee’s Gallery 505 in June.
Max, 79, catapulted to fame in the 1960s with his bright, psychedelic paintings. By 1967, his “Love” poster was everywhere with more than one million copies sold.
The uber-groovy artist Peter Max’s visual style, with its bright colors and hippy overtones, was part of the visual vernacular in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Max has devoted nearly four decades painting pop culture. He’s painted portraits of many well-known musicians (Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and Taylor Swift, to name a few). He was also the official artist for the Grammy Awards five times.
Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Michael Cartellone received a good dose of art while growing up in Cleveland. As a kid, he took a field trip to the Salvador Dali Museum, which was based here at the time, and had an epiphany.
Last month, we spoke with photographer (and former Playboy contributor) Douglas Kirkland in the days leading up to his 50-year retrospective in Los Angeles, which featured iconic images of everyone from a sun-kissed Brigitte Bardot playing cards on a Mexico floor in 1965, to a toothy Jack Nicholson gripping his Oscar statuette in ‘75.
